Let's face it. We can't all rent a day on a hot-air balloon or arrange for a private jet to fly us and our loved one to Paris for a romantic dinner. Sometimes we just don't have the dough it takes to go overboard like that.
There are ways, however, that those who are rich in spirit and poor in pocket can show our love how much we care for them.

  • Create an atmosphere of a fancy restaurant at home without spending a lot of money. Make a nice dinner or get take-out from a restaurant your significant other enjoys. Ask a friend to dress in nice clothes and serve you the food, just as he or she were a server. If you have a friend who plays an instrument or sings, ask them to perform quietly in the corner for both of you.

  • Gather a bouquet of wildflowers and give it to your family member, your friend or your beloved.

  • Create a handmade piece of art depicting what the love between you and your significant other represents to you.

  • If you're a musician, write a song about your significant other and the love you share.

  • Buy a large popcorn bowl and put microwave popcorn and a certificate for a video rental or your loved one's favorite video itself.

  • Write a poem to express your feelings. It doesn't necessarily have to be written in a greeting card. Write it in the inside cover of a book of other poems or frame it with a photo of the two of you.

  • Write letters to each other expressing how you feel about the other currently, how you felt the day you met and what you think about the future.

  • Compile a scrapbook about the time you have spent together.

  • If children are in the picture, arrange for them to go to a friend or family member's house for the night so you can spend Valentine's Day alone.

  • Make a batch of cookies shaped as hearts for your love or your friend.

  • Come up with a scavenger hunt with small gifts (favorite candy bar, bath soap, carnation) that leads to a larger gift.

  • Make a personalized tape filled with love songs or songs that you and your significant other enjoy.

  • For those who enjoy the beach: Gather a container of sand and sea shells from a beach and buy some large-grained salt so your significant other can create an "ocean" in a bathtub.

  • Take your love on a picnic at a park you have never been to -- or one that holds special memories for the two of you. Bring their favorite food and a book of poems or short stories for you to read together under a tree.

  • Light many candles around the bathroom and fill the bath with scented bubble bath and bath oils. Invite your partner for a sensual soak and back scrub together.
